Remarks at 2014 Advisory Board Meeting of Confucius Institute Co-founded by
UW-Platteville and SCUN
Professor Li Jinlin, President of SCUN
Distinguished Chancellor Shields, dear old and new friends, ladies and gentlemen,
September, permeated with fragrant osmanthus and laden with golden fruits, is always a harvest time everywhere, in Platteville or Wuhan. We are glad that all the friends gather here today to renew friendship and seek win-win development. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my gratitude on behalf of South-Central University for Nationalities (SCUN) to all those who have offered, are offering, and will offer their support and assistance to the development of Confucius Institute and the cooperation between UW-Platteville and SCUN.
During the past six years, Confucius Institute has turned from a young plant into an orchard bearing rich fruits. We are very delighted to see its language and cultural activities conducted from campus to communities with a good reputation from all circles. CI’s growth excites me whenever I watch the lively performances on the stage of its Spring Festival Gala, sense the American students’ rigorous attitude toward learning the Chinese language and culture, see the popularity of Chinese food with the Americans, and welcome scholarship winners recommended by our CI. All these achievements are attributed not only to CI’s pioneers, such as Chancellor Shields, Dr. David Van Buren, Ms. Marian Maciej-Hiner, Dr Wally Iselin, Ms Mei Reeder, but also to the Chinese Consulate in Chicago for their support to our CI, and to all the CI staff members, past and present.
Although the vast Pacific Ocean stands between Platteville and Wuhan, our two universities are bonded tightly. In the past 14 years of communication and cooperation, we understand each other, trust each other and help each other. A series of cooperation programs, like exchange of scholars and students, Master of Science in English Education (that is, MSEE) for over ten years, have deepened our understanding and promoted our mutual friendship. In this sense, the establishment of Confucius Institute has built a bridge of language, culture and friendship between our two universities and even two countries.
It is our firm belief that our Confucius Institute, a spiritual home full of trust, friendship and love, will strengthen the communication and cooperation between our two universities, and cultivate more outstanding talents with cross-cultural ability for the US and China.
Ladies and gentlemen, please join me in our sincere hope that our Confucius Institute will be larger, stronger and more prosperous! Long live friendship! (Auld Lang Syne!) All of you are welcome to China and to SCUN as well.
President of South-Central University for Nationalities
